Dear Friend: The opportunities are unprecedented. Clearly, we live in the most exciting period in the history of medicine. There's tremendous hope that new gene therapy techniques will soon block the growth of blood vessels in cancerous tumors. Hope that defects in the Alzheimer's gene can be corrected through an infusion of new healthy cells. Hope that a new retina or kidney will be created through stem cells. Hope that other new therapies will – some day soon – eliminate muscular dystrophy, Parkinson's disease, diabetes, cystic fibrosis, and so on. Where does such work – such hope – take place? Right here in your own backyard – here, at the University of Minnesota. Our team of 600 investigators is working on behalf of you and your family – looking for answers to perplexing medical problems that have plagued all of us for generations. Medicine at Minnesota looks to heighten awareness of this research activity, AND generate financial support to help shorten the timeline for new discoveries and treatments. Consider this request a personal invitation. If you have an interest in playing an active role in the fight against a disease that has affected family members and friends, please give to support our world-class, Minnesota-based team of medical scientists. The opportunities before us are enormous! Our Minnesota Medical Foundation staff members are well-prepared to answer any questions you may have about joining our efforts. Drop them a line at mmf@mmf.umn.edu. Or, if you're ready to make a gift today, you can conveniently and securely contribute on-line. In advance, thank you for your support. It is our great pleasure to be working on behalf of all Minnesotans and their families. Sincerely, Deborah Powell,
